Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do you accept international students?
A: Yes, but you must possess intermediate English listening and comprehension skills. We do offer a special ESL class to small groups of 6-8 students. To reserve your spot and for more details, please contact us.
Q: Can I skip Barista Levels I and II and just take Barista Level III?
A: This may put you in a disadvantaged position to other people in the class. For this reason, we recommend you take Barista Level I and Barista Level II in their entirety. Even experienced Baristas with a couple years of experience can find themselves lagging behind novices whose Baristas careers are just a few hours old. Because a novice has taken Level I and II.

Q: I am interested in learning the art of coffee roasting. Would you recommend any resources? Do you offer classes?
A: It is not a course we list on our website because of the complexity of skills needed for coffee roasting.
Roasting courses are more often designed for you to buy roasting equipment, to persuade you to believe that anyone can roast - and easily all in one weekend. That is not the purpose of our course, we are not here to sell you equipment, we teach you HOW to be successful at roasting.
In 3rd wave cafes’ the # 1 seller is espresso based drinks. As a roaster, if you don’t know how to make espresso, dial-in the espresso machine and grinder, or taste for errors then you can’t fix your roasting errors and shouldn’t roast for espresso.
It's not like 20 years ago when you could put any beans in a bag and sell it. The industry has grown so competitive with so many options that you are unlikely to succeed if you can’t make espresso. The roasters that are succeeding are the roasters that know how to ‘really’ make coffee and taste coffee.
Q: Does the Academy review and endorse coffee related products?
A: We receive lots of requests on a weekly basis and prefer that you send the product to our campus for assessment. We will review your product but will not endorse it. If the product is exceptional then we may feel compelled to feature the product in our classes or blog about it. Send your product to: 3711 E 1st Ave, Burnaby, BC V5C 3V6. We don't promise anything nor do we accept commissions for reviewing.
